Amaterasu Okami
The Path of Light

Amaterasu(1) (ahm-ah-taerra-sue) is Japanese for "The Light of Heaven" and is the Japanese Shinto Goddess of Heavenly Light (Sun Goddess).  She is a key player in the Japanese Shinto creation myth and rules the High Celestial Plain (Takaamahara) and the Universe.

Shinto means way of the Gods.  "Shin" meaning "Kami" or divine and "to" or "do" meaning way.  It is made up of folk traditions of Japan grounded in nature and the outdoors, particularly on mountains and in waterfalls and streams that is meant to bring out the best in people.

Amaterasu Okami means "Great August deity who shines in the heavens."  Each morning when the sun rises, it serves as a reminder of one's own Divine inner Light as well as the Universal Divine Light that shines in and on the world.  It also is a reminder to "Day after day, create a new day."
